The spirit of North Africa fills the Eurostars Laietana Palace with art
March 10, 2008
The Eurostars Laietana Palace 4* (Barcelona) presents, from 5 March to 20 April, an exhibition of work by the painter and sculptor, Antonio Zapata. This show entails a dozen canvases in which Zapata explores the use of new forms, materials and colours in a series of compositions much influenced by the artist’s travels, throughout his lifetime, to North Africa and the Canary Islands.Antonio Zapata is unusual for being a self-taught and multi-faceted artist. A psychologist and silversmith, he has dedicated his life to painting and sculpture since 1977. He pays special attention in his work to composition and the combination of colours, the nature and origins of which are very different. “I let my hands take me where they want when I work with colours and forms”, the artist asserts. Veritable amalgams of materials and forms, the creations exhibited by Antonio Zapata at the Eurostars Laietana Palace find their source of inspiration in the influence exerted by the landscapes he has contemplated during his travels. “Nature and the sea bed are two of my greatest sources of inspiration”, Zapata points out.
