Joaquín Cortés

March 10, 2008

Joaquín Cortés, devilishly handsome and dressed by Jean Paul Gaultier, indulges in a frenetic show of foot-stamping, sweat-spurting, shamelessly attention-seeking flamenco dance with interludes of rapturous applause from the audience. With his private clan of musicians and singers to frame him, JC attains new heights in Latino kitch in this highly theatrical performance entitled Mi Soledad (My Solitude). Leave your boyfriend at home. O-lé. Tickets are €20-€58

Wushu

March 10, 2008

Wushu has a wok and knows how to use it. In fact, this restaurant knew how to use it so well, whipping up a range of Asian treats (pad Thai, lo mein and laksa) and sending them tumbling in generous potions into mammoth plates, that queues began to form. Now in bigger but no less lovely premises, Wushu offers good Asian grub rarely found in Barcelona, courtesy of expert Aussie chef Bradley Ainsworth.

Family Silverware Exhibition

March 10, 2008

A new exhibition in Hungarian National Museum features the amazing collection of silver tableware from the 18th and 19th century.

The collection of gold and silver works of art that represents country’s culture and history was started over 200 years ago. Many of the pieces were obtained by the museum during the Socialist period when many were forced to part with precious heirlooms, and acquired from Pawn Store Company, that used to be a monoplist in the antiques market in Hungary.

In addition to table silverware crafted in Hungary, the collection also features some works made outside the territory of the former Habsburg Monarchy, especially the splendid works of Viennese goldsmiths.

The exhibition will continue till 24th March, on the second floor of the Hungarian National Museum.
Address: VIII district, Múzeum krt. 14-16

Open: Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00

The Kills

March 10, 2008

I keep having to check my ticket. Can this be right?

The UK’s favourite scuzz-rock heroes, daters of Kate Moss, wearers of leather and chelsea boots, cooler that a polar bear’s icebox, supported by the equally cool, equally rare in Paris the Gossip? And a chance to catch up-and-comers Pete and the Pirates?

Café Bo!

March 3, 2008

After a stroll around Parc Güell, don’t rush back to the centre so quickly… mosey on down to the barrio of Gràcia with its pretty squares and cute boutiques. For sunny snacks (yes, even in February) grab a terrace table at Bo! on plaça Rius i Taulet and have an early tapas lunch accompanied by a heady Volldamm malt beer. Then sit back, relax and watch the kids play in the square. Nice.

The Music Hall of Williamsburg

March 3, 2008

The hippest neighborhood in the land (Williamsburg) recently saw the opening of another fantastic music venue. The Music Hall of Williamsburg is small enough to feel intimate, but big enough to get some phenomenal acts. The Hall has already hosted Patti Smith on opening night and a memorable series of shows by The National. On March 3 and 4, two classic lo-fi rockers take the stage—Vic Chesnutt and Jonathan Richman. This is your rare chance to see two legendary songwriters share the same stage. Arrive in the ‘hood early or stay late so you can hit up the gazillion cool bars that litter the area. Other notable upcoming shows include The Hives, The Black Lips, and Pelican. Williamsburg rocks.
