I served the King of England jumps from paperback to the big screen
July 31, 2008
The movie tells the personal story of Jan Dilé (character played by the Bulgarian actor Ivan Barnev), a very ambitious young village waiter who dreams with becoming a multi millionaire.
Dité will go through several jobs and brothels until he comes across a young girl from the Sudetes and very proud of her cold Arian blood, on those days when Hitler made this Czech territory his own.
His encounter with this young girl Lisa will mean the step up to fortune with a few very valued stamps left by the Jewish.
But this wealth will be ephemeral and the upcoming Communist regime after the war will take him to jail.
The film starts when Jan Dilé´s character gets out of prison and meditates about his past and what it could have happened if he had acted differently.
“I served the King of England” is a script by Bohumil Hrabal Brno, 1914 - Prague, 1997) novel titled “Served the King of England”.
It is not the first time Menzel adapts Hrabal. He already did it with “Capricious Summer” and “Closely observed Trains, which made him win an Oscar to the best foreign movie in 1966.
With a modest budget of a little more than two million Euros, this film is one of the most valuable secrets in the cinemas this Summer.

Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre
April 4, 2008
When New Yorkers aren’t yelling or pushing each other, they love to laugh. Sometimes the wit and humor you hear on the streets is entertaining enough. But if you’re searching for some real underground comedy, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre is here to make you double over. Upcoming and established comics take turns doing stand up, one-man shows, or group sketch comedy. Started by a quartet of comedians in the late 90’s (including Saturday Night Live’s Amy Poehler), they now produce shows every night of the week. And with cheap beer and wine for sale during performances, the UCB is guaranteed to put you in a good mood.

The Hives
April 4, 2008

Thanks to The Hives, music fans the world over can once again use the phrase ‘Swedish supergroup’ without irony. Or not. Frenetic, loud and just plain fun, The Hives are in league with bands like The Strokes and The White Stripes in preserving the rawness of punk with pop sophistication and a (presumably ironic) rejection of false modesty. On stage lead singer Pelle Almqvist channels Mick Jagger, James Brown and Johnny Rotten, helping give Spin magazine reason to rank the band’s live shows among the world’s best. Expect the Sunday evening show in downtown Prague to cause a rock’n’roll scandal.
Macbeth at The Lyceum Theatre
April 4, 2008
“Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.” Let’s get right to the point. We all know that Brits play a better Shakespeare character than any American actor. For proof, go to the Lyceum Theatre to see a fantastic production of Macbeth starring Mr. Patrick Stewart. This play has Soviet undertones, grim military industrial complex references, and the obligatory descent into madness brilliantly captured by Captain Picard himself. The show only runs through May 24, so get thee self there before the cauldron bubbles over.
Barney Greengrass
March 10, 2008
Stereotypical New York waiters, amazing smoked fish, and surprisingly good coffee add up to one of the best breakfast experiences on the planet at Barney Greengrass. The self-proclaimed sturgeon king has been serving New Yorkers on the Upper Westside since 1908. Start your day with the combo: Nova Scotia Lox and Sturgeon—a delicious white fish that perfectly complements the salmon. It comes with scrambled eggs and a toasted bialy (sort of like a bagel, but better). Thanks to Barney, you’ll pack enough protein in yourself for a whole weekend of partying down.
