King Khan, the self-named “Maharaja of Soul” from Montreal, launches himself onto Barcelona’s Sala Apolo stage for what promises to be “clashing, clanking Keith, Lou and Iggy flirtatious guitar psychedelica.” He is accompanied by band The Shrines, which includes Mr Speedfinger on guitar. And the occasion? The recent release of a new album: What Is!? March 27, doors open 9.30pm.

After the release of the pioneering album Endtroducing, nigh on a decade ago, (yes, we are that old), the nimble-fingered DJ Shadow just hasn’t stopped producing. Located just few metres from the main tourist street of Budapest, this speakeasy pub offers the atmosphere of prohibition-era America of 1920s and 30s.

Sleight of Heart, the new, stripped down, album from this former Arab Strap man, is mesmeric stuff, intrigued by the simpleness of the arrangements and drawn in by the tunes on piano and guitar. The barbed lyrics remain but the depressive tendencies seem to be undercut by a more playful sense of humour than usual on the new tracks. We’ve gone on about the Garage here before I’m sure but I can’t help thinking this is going to be ideal for new numbers like Love Comes in Waves and I’m looking forward to the prospect of an encore of the Christmas Number One that never was, the roaring sing-a-long of We’re All Going to Die.

But if you’re searching for some real underground comedy, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre is here to make you double over. Upcoming and established comics take turns doing stand up, one-man shows, or group sketch comedy. Started by a quartet of comedians in the late 90’s (including Saturday Night Live’s Amy Poehler), they now produce shows every night of the week. Film fans have a rare opportunity starting tomorrow when the Febiofest film festival launches its 15th edition. Billed as the largest film festival in the Czech Republic (edging out the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in numbers of admissions), Febiofest offers a rich selection of films from around the world, most of them with English-language subtitles. Arthouse fans have the rare opportunity to see films which seldom screen in theaters, including breakout Icelandic thriller Jar City, Cannes Jury Prize-winner Silent Light, Balkan drama Armin, and Romanian classic Asphalt Tango. The festival programme also includes crowd-pleasing titles like Sergei Bodrov’s Oscar-nominated Ghengis Khan story Mongol, romantic comedy 2 Days In Paris and Iraq war thriller In The Valley Of Elah, plus a tribute to Alan Parker, including screenings of his mind-blowing film Pink Floyd: The Wall. Most screenings take place at Village Cinemas Andel.

Thanks to The Hives, music fans the world over can once again use the phrase ‘Swedish supergroup’ without irony. Or not. Frenetic, loud and just plain fun, The Hives are in league with bands like The Strokes and The White Stripes in preserving the rawness of punk with pop sophistication and a (presumably ironic) rejection of false modesty. On stage lead singer Pelle Almqvist channels Mick Jagger, James Brown and Johnny Rotten, helping give Spin magazine reason to rank the band’s live shows among the world’s best. Expect the Sunday evening show in downtown Prague to cause a rock’n’roll scandal.
Macbeth at The Lyceum Theatre

“Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble.” Let’s get right to the point. We all know that Brits play a better Shakespeare character than any American actor. For proof, go to the Lyceum Theatre to see a fantastic production of Macbeth starring Mr. Patrick Stewart. This play has Soviet undertones, grim military industrial complex references, and the obligatory descent into madness brilliantly captured by Captain Picard himself. The show only runs through May 24, so get thee self there before the cauldron bubbles over.
